With the start of each year we make resolutions for our health, our jobs, and our relationships. But what goals have you set for your home?
Design and Real Estate Experts have comprised a list to make your home a more welcoming, comfortable, clean, and green household. Here are five resolutions for your home.
1. Clear the Clutter
This is one of the best and most cost efficient ways to instantly feel better about your home. Start by going room-by-room clearing out anything you don’t need or haven’t used in a while then donate it to charity. And remember to be particular in the future about what you bring into your home. This can help eliminate the de-cluttering process.
2. Make it Safe and Sound
Be sure you have properly installed carbon monoxide and fire detectors. An easy tip to prevent household fires is to regularly check and clean your lint traps, but most importantly the vents and ducts behind the dryer. Lint is highly combustible.
If your home was last build or remodeled before 1978 – consider testing for lead paint and asbestos flooring.
3. Save Energy and Money
You don’t need solar panels or a hybrid car to be green. It’s as easy as remembering to turn off the lights when you leave a room. Conserving the amount of water used during daily activities such as brushing teeth, washing dishes, watering your yard, and taking showers can make a big difference.
Another idea you can consider is recycling things you use in your home. Tin cans, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard, and paper can all be reused. Some neighborhoods even have recycling pickup on a specific day.
4. Create a Cleaning Schedule
Don’t commit yourself to a whole day of endless cleaning. Instead assign one or two tasks to complete for each day of the week. Some tasks should be done daily, these include making your bed and putting the dishes in the dishwasher. And especially remembering to tidy up every night – bring everything back to its assigned place.
5. Ready for Entertaining
When our home isn’t ready for company we don’t feel like inviting people in. However, our family and friends should always be welcome. Let’s eliminate that stress by keeping a house that’s ready for entertaining.
The addition of plants in a home helps clean the air and finish a space. (The peace lily is one of my favorites). Next, try rearranging your furniture so it’s oriented in conversation groups instead of facing the television.
Now that your home is ready for 2016... Be sure to know what your home is worth! Knowing your home's value can help you with insurance needs, the upcoming tax season, and of course, in the event you want to capitalize on the explosive growth in the Brazos Valley and cash in on your home's equity for renovations and/or to sell so you can purchase a new, larger home!
