The new Scott & White hospital is expected to bring many more jobs to the College Station area. When the hospital opens in August of 2013 it will have an emergency department, neonatal intensive care unit, operating rooms, cath labs, cardiac services, maternity services suites, intraoperative robotics and other specialty services, comprehensive cancer services, pharmacy, and state- of- the -art imaging technology and other diagnostic capabilities. The hospital will open with 119 beds but can be expanded later to accommodate another 24 beds should the need arise. The 98-acre campus is located at the intersection of Highway 6 and Rock Prairie Road. The hospital will have five floors and house 143 beds. An adjacent four- story building will house medical offices.
In the first phase of the project $120 million will be invested which will create 600 jobs, and it is expected that more medical businesses will join the area and that will create more jobs as well. College Station's Director of Economic and Community Development David Gwin said “those 600 high paying jobs would come to a head within five years of opening and carry a $40 million payroll.” All the new jobs will create a need for housing. The new hospital is located in South College Station, which is a new and growing area with many housing options.
All the growth to this area will require road improvements to accommodate the increase in traffic. The first steps would involve updating the Longmire and Rock Prairie intersection. Widening Rock Prairie itself and doing work on that bridge would also be involved in the upgrades. The major improvements for the area are likely to be about three or more years away.
