Prepare your home for Winter!

Now that fall and the inconsistent Texas weather of high 80’s one day and low 30’s the next are officially here, your home should be prepared for this cold, rainy season. You would be surprised of what just one night of freezing temperatures could do to your holiday plans. Make sure your home is prepared now in order to prevent you from being number 200 on an appointment list to get your heating system repaired.

Here is a checklist to get your home prepared for a cold winter night:

Tune up on your heating system:

Have a technician inspect your furnace or heat pump to be sure the system is clean and in good condition.

Local HVAC Companies:

            Air Concept Services

            Malek AC Services

            Bakers Heating & Cooling

            Aggieland Climate Control

            Climate Masters of Bryan/College Station

Turn off all exterior faucets:

Undrained water in pipes can freeze, which causes the pipes to burst as the ice expands. Before freezing temperatures arrive, disconnect all garden hoses and drain the water that remains in the faucet lines.

Caulk windows and doors:

If gaps between siding, windows and door frames are bigger than the width of a nickel, you should reapply exterior caulk. Exterior caulk can be found at an appliance and supplies store. (Ex: Lowes, Home Depot, ACE, etc.)

Check your roof:

Look for damaged, loose or missing shingles that may leak during winter storms. If needing to be replaced, check with a local roofing company.

 Local Roofing Companies:

            Lone-Star Roof Systems

            America’s Choice Roofing

            On Top Roofing

            Prestige Roofing

Clean Gutters:

If your gutters are full of debris, water can back up causing damage to the roof, siding and wood trim. This may also cause leaks, which can create mold.

Depending on the size of your home, the typical range is from $70-$225 to have gutters cleaned. If there are any damaged/missing gutters or fascia boards, contact a local gutter company.

Local Gutter Companies:

            A J’s Seamless Gutters

            Gutter Helmet

            Elite Gutter

Call a chimney sweeper:

Make sure your fireplace, vents, and heating appliances (burning gas, oil, wood or coal chimney) are clean. Having a well repaired fireplace will prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide from creeping into your home.

Local Chimney Sweep Companies:

            Ables Top Hat Chimney Sweeps

Chim Chimney Sweeps of Bryan/College Station
