It's been a while since I wore a tall black stiff paper pilgrim hat with a faux golden buckle on front or donned a simple head band made of brown paper grocery sacks with glued on dime store feathers in a Thanksgiving elementary school play... So, I thought I would brush up on the meaning of Thanksgiving. I found an entertaining (and seems to be accurate) account of our history on a website called Politifact.com It was a quick read and explained more than I was looking for. Each year we can't wait for Thanksgiving to get here and for it to quickly be "done". Is it because Thanksgiving signals the green light (for us all to push the giant green "GO" button) on the start of the Christmas season. We all plan and rush through the family get together, not really taking time to be still, to revisit old friends/relatives or to make new ones, or to ponder the past 11 months for our successes/non successes and set goals for where we'll be this time next year.
Try to change that this year. Take time to take a breath and enjoy your friends and family. Promise yourselves that you won't stay in the kitchen all day. A young man I visited with today, commented that while the women are in the kitchen cooking, it gives the men a chance to sit and visit longer. Maybe it's time to place that order for your Thanksgiving meal to be precooked and delivered or for the men to do the cooking (so the ladies can sit and visit), maybe have a bit of wine..... The men in our family are much better cooks, anyway.
Ha - something to plan for next year!
Wishing you and yours the happiest of Thanksgivings.
